Youth in Arts Programming

"The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." President Barack Obama

Studies prove that young people involved in the arts perform better academically and show a greater involvement in community service.

Arts programs designed for young adults foster critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and innovation. Young people who attend schools where the arts were integrated into classroom curriculum outperform their peers in math and reading who did not have an arts integrated curriculum.

Young people who participate in the Performing Arts (music, theatre, dance), tend to be more in touch with their emotions, able to verbalize what they are feeling and better equipped to deal with challenges as Adults later in life.

The Spreckels Performing Arts Center Youth in Arts Workshop provides a comprehensive experience for those young people who are interested in Theatre.  They are taught dance, voice, and acting techniques by top professionals from the Bay Area.

March on down and be a part of the JR. production of the six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy,

The Music Man!!  This show features iconic songs and a story filled with wit, warmth and good old-fashioned romance.  The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash but the plans are foiled when he falls for Marian, whose belief in Harold’s power just might help him succeed in the end in spite of himself.

Complete the registration form and return it to the box office with a $50 non-refundable deposit. Total tuition is $450. (See below for more information.)

Karen Pinomaki is thrilled to direct for the Spreckels Youth Theater in Arts Program. She says, “It is so exciting and rewarding to get creative with our youth, to encourage them to step outside of their comfort zones, take time to play, imagine, and succeed. More than being the best actor they become their best person.”  From 2002-2005 Karen was Stage Director and an Instructor for youth ages 8-17 at Imagine Performing Arts theater arts school in Dublin CA. She has been acting as long as she can remember. She studied tap and jazz dance under Bob Macke at Glenn Shipley’s school of the Danse and earned a BA in Theater Arts from CSUF Fresno. Her theatrical studies continued at A.C.T. in San Francisco and New Playwright’s Theater in Ashland, OR.  Returning to the S.F. Bay Area she was co-founder of San Ramon Performing Arts for the City of San Ramon and directed numerous productions there. She relocated Santa Rosa, 12 years ago and has performed in many musicals throughout the North Bay but always expecting to return to working with youth in the theater arts.
