DEFINITION Performs a wide variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and routine activities in constructing, repairing, installing, maintaining, monitoring, and cleaning City parks, buildings, streets, sidewalks, fences, gutters, storm drains, water and sewage systems, and in supplying clean, safe, potable; and reliable amounts of drinking water; performs other duties as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Maintenance Worker II class is the advanced journey level in the City maintenance and operational services. The class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by requiring greater initiative, judgment, responsibility, autonomy and discretion in planning and completing a wide variety of maintenance and operational activities. Although the incumbent in this position has day-to-day responsibility for assigned projects, the position differs from the Public Works Services Supervisor by the lack of overall responsibility for division operations. SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED General supervision is provided by a Public Works Services Supervisor and/or the Director of Public Works/City Engineer. Assignments generally include lead supervision of other maintenance and maintenance-related positions in both full-time and seasonal employment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary) - Inspects and performs construction and maintenance tasks related to water and sewage systems, streets, fences, benches, drinking fountains, sidewalks, gutters, and storm drains
- Maintains and repairs pumps, generators, valves, water meters and radio reading equipment, chlorinators, cholrine generators, and tanks; locates and repairs water leaks in mains and service lines; checks and maintains wells and water lines; cleans sewer lines, repairs manholes and sewer pipes
- Operates and/or drives a variety of light and heavy equipment, including tractors, dump trucks, backhoes, forklifts, sewer vacuum truck, boom truck, mowers, brush chipper, power hand tools, jack hammers, line trimmers, compactors, utility locating equipment, and chain saws; makes repairs to equipment
- Performs carpentry, painting, electrical, and plumbing maintenance for City facilities
- Flags traffic; installs and removes traffic cones and barricades; spreads asphalt to patch and repair streets; paints traffic markings on streets and curbs
- Performs special projects including checking and maintaining wells and other water supply points, installing and repairing street and traffic signs, cleaning and maintaining pools and spas, and renovating athletic activity areas; installs and repairs irrigation and sprinkler systems; makes minor repairs to equipment
- Applies paint and other coatings by hand or spray; prepares a variety of surfaces for painting; cleans and maintains equipment used in preparation and painting; works on ladders and scaffolding at unusual heights
- Maintains and repairs playground equipment and areas; removes graffiti; cleans ditches and culverts; trims trees and bushes; mows weeds; cleans and removes litter from parks, streets, and other public areas; picks up litter, leaves, and tree trimmings; cuts weeds and removes trimmings and leaves
- Responds to citizen questions, concerns and complaints; completes forms and writes reports
- Takes initiative to seek out work, is proactive in addressing problems, completes tasks and follows through with work assignments
- Works with others cooperatively, using positive communication to complete work assignments
- Exercises proper judgement and exhibits good decision making
- May operate and calibrate telemetry system; test for cross connections; sample for water quality, including bacteriological contamination; assist with hazardous material cleanup
- May operate, troubleshoot, diagnose and repair building mechanical and electrical systems
- May maintain and repair street lights
- May inspect and repair tennis and basketball courts; perform safety checks on playground equipment; renovate and/or maintain ball fields; inspect and maintain fire hydrants, bike paths, foot bridges, and creeks
- May provide twenty-four hour standby service
QUALIFICATIONS Experience/Education Sufficient experience and education to successfully perform the duties of a Maintenance Worker II in the City of Rohnert Park. A typical way of obtaining the qualifications is to possess the equivalent of a high school diploma and four years experience equivalent to that of a Maintenance Worker I with the City of Rohnert Park. Knowledge/Skill/Ability In addition to the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of a Maintenance Worker I, the incumbent in the Maintenance Worker II position is expected to possess … Knowledge of: - Basic principles and practices of supervision and training, including occupational hazards and standard safety precautions appropriate to the safe conduct of City construction and maintenance activities

Licensing Requirements: - Valid Class C California driver's license by date of appointment. A Class B California driver’s license may be required for some positions.
- A Grade D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the State of California must be obtained during the probationary period. Positions assigned to the Utilities Division shall require a Grade T1 and/or D3 Water Distribution Operator Certificate
- Required licenses and certifications must be kept current during employment with the City.
Working Conditions Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision, for example, when operating heavy equipment and repairing irrigation systems. The need to lift, push, and drag bags of cement, mowers, and other equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use pool and other cleaning chemicals and ingredients and do water sampling and work around wastewater gases, exposing the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb on ladders, use power, noise and vibrating producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions which subjects the employee to traffic, mechanical, and electrical hazards. Incumbents may be required to work at heights, underground, and in tight or confined spaces.
