Public Works may be defined as any project which includes the
erection, construction, alteration, painting, repair, or improvement of
any public structure, building or road (California Public Contract
Code). Labor intensive work done on a public agency's infrastructure
falls within this category. Also, work, which requires a valid
contractor's license, is usually a public works project. These projects
are either managed by the Purchasing Division or the Engineering
Department.
Because public works projects account for a great deal of the
City's expenditures, and also account for a great portion of its risks,
contractor's liability insurance, workers' compensation insurance and
automobile liability insurance must be secured prior to commencement of
work, with the City named as additional insured.
