Throughout the year, keeping the storm drain system clear is a function of the Street Maintenance Division.
Maintenance of flood control channels and creek beds
are under contractual agreement with Sonoma County Water Agency. City
of Rohnert Park personnel are not allowed to remove vegetation from
these areas, in accordance with regulations which protect habitat for
steelhead and coho salmon, as defined in the Federal Endangered Species
Act. Questions concerning flood control channel maintenance may be
directed to the Sonoma County Water Agency.
Prior to the rainy season, storm drains and flood
control channel inlets are checked for blockages, and obstructions are
cleared.
During the rainy season, storm drains are checked and cleared to provide adequate drainage and minimize localized flooding.
During Storm Watch and Storm Warning conditions, Public
Works personnel team up in pairs, patrolling problem areas, placing
warning signs with barricades near flooded streets, and placing sand
bags to control water flow, if necessary. During this time, sandbags
and sand are made available to the public at designated locations.
Following a storm, the City is checked for
storm-related damage. Logjams are cleared from beneath creek bridges,
silt from flooding is removed from sidewalks, fallen tree limbs are
removed from streets and sidewalks, potholes are patched, and signs are
repaired.
