PART-TIME ANIMAL SHELTER ASSISTANT

Starting Rate - $12.00/hour

With Euthanasia Certificate - $13.00/hour

TWO (2) POSITIONS: One position works an average of 30 hours per week and the other position works an average of 20 hours per week.

DEFINITION:  Under direct supervision, operates and maintains the Animal Shelter; cooperatively works with other staff and volunteers, including junior volunteers; assists in the intake of strays and owner-surrendered animals, and the redemption and adoption of animals from the Shelter; helps maintain records; provides front counter and phone coverage; and does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  Cleans, feeds and medicates all animals, makes certain that the Shelter is kept clean and sanitary at all times, and that the animals are properly cared for; assists with the sale of animal licenses and the collection of established fees; assists members of the public seeking to redeem an impounded animal, or adopt an animal; assists in the intake of strays or owner-surrendered animals; provides input on temperament of animals; helps maintain appropriate daily records; and covers the front counter and phones.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Part-Time Animal Shetler Assistant spends approximately 60% of the time performing kennel work which requires repeated bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and lifting (i.e. kennel maintenance, animal care, etc.) and the balance is made up of front office duties.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    * Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
    * Possess a valid Class C California driver’s license and good driving record
    * This position requires year-round availability
    * Smoking is not permitted inside City facilities/vehicles or within 20 feet of main entrances, exits, and operable windows. Applicants are advised that the use of tobacco products during work hours is not permitted.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

    * Techniques for properly handling and caring for animals
    * Operation and functions of an animal shelter
    * Physical and behavioral characteristics of domestic animals; breed identification
    * Receptionist, telephone techniques,computer skills and customer service skills   
    * Basic mathematics   

Ability to:

    * Work a flexible schedule (The Shelter is staffed 7 days/week, 8 a.m. to approximately 8 p.m.)
    * Obtain Euthanasia Certificate within 18 months of date of hire
    * Effectively and safely handle a variety of animals, including fractious dogs and feral cats
    * Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds (i.e. animals, bags of litter, etc.)
    * Process payments
    * Maintain accurate records
    * Follow oral and written directions
    * Deal effectively and tactfully with the general public
    * Maintain cooperative working relationships              

Training & Experience:  Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

SELECTION PROCESS

All applications will be reviewed by the Human Resources Department and those meeting the minimum qualifications will be forwarded for review by the Animal Shelter Supervisor. The most highly-qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an oral interview.

Those selected for further processing will undergo a pre-employment background investigation including:

    * Reference checking of current and previous employers
    * Driving record check with the DMV

Those that complete the pre-employment background process will receive a Conditional Offer of Employment and will then be scheduled for:

    * A pre-employment physical exam, including drug testing
    * Criminal background check through fingerprinting

Those that complete this process will receive a Final Job Offer.
