The gateway to Sonoma County’s wine country, Rohnert Park is a well-planned community with thirteen neighborhood parks, nine tennis court complexes, five swimming pools, and two 18-hole golf courses. The City is home to 43,000 residents and occupies approximately 7 miles of land area.  It was incorporated in 1962, and operates with a five-member City Council from which the Mayor is selected. With a budget of $36.1 million, the City has 189.75 full-time positions and approximately 200 part-time, seasonal employees. Rohnert Park provides a wonderful quality of life with educational opportunities available through the Cotati/Rohnert Park Unified School District and Sonoma State University. The City’s Spreckels Performing Arts Center, Community Center and Sports Center are some of the finest public facilities in the area offering a variety of activities and social events.


 



THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Public Works provides operation and maintenance of the sewer collection system and the water distribution system. The City does not operate treatment plants for either water or wastewater, but is part of regional systems. This position reports to the Public Works Manager or designee. The Public Works Department follows a 9/80 work schedule.  

THE WATER QUALITY SPECIALIST…

  • Works independently to manage and administer the City's Water Quality Monitoring and Cross-Connection Control Programs to ensure that the City's potable water system complies with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) water quality regulations.
  • Performs field, office, and technical tasks related to water quality sampling, testing, recordkeeping, and reporting to CDPH.
  • Arranges laboratory analyses of water samples and interprets sampling results.
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
  • Prepares specifications and requests quotes for state-mandated water monitoring requirements and assists staff with selection of an approved laboratory to analyze samples.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Equivalent of a High School Diploma or G.E.D.;
  • An Associate or Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology, bacteriology, or environmental science is desirable; and
  • Two years of experience in the same or related field is desirable.

LICENSING

  • Possession of a valid Class C California Drivers License
  • Grade 1 California Water Distribution Operator Certificate at time of appointment
  • Grade 1 California Water Treatment Operator Certificate within the 12-month probationary period
  • A Cross-Connection Control Specialist Certificationn within the 12-month probationary period

 

FRINGE BENEFITS

CALPERS RETIREMENT: 2.7% at age 55 retirement formula. Medicare Taxes are withheld, but the City does not participate in Social Security.  Employees contribute 0.5% of the employer's contribution from 3/1/08 - 8/31/08; employees contribute 1% of the employer's contribution thereafter.

MEDICAL INSURANCE: Employees may select from Blue Cross, Kaiser, or a Health Savings Account.

DENTAL & VISION INSURANCE: City provides Delta Dental and VSP (vision) insurance.

HOLIDAYS: 13 ½ paid holidays per year.

FLOATING LEAVE DAYS: 2 days per fiscal year

VACATION: 104 hours paid vacation per year. Vacation sellback of up to 40 hours per year.

SICK LEAVE: 8 hours per month. City does not participate in State Disability Insurance (SDI).

RETIREE BENEFITS:  The City will contribute $75/month for active employees in a paid status to a Retiree Health Savings Account (RHSA) The employee has to work a minimum of 10 years in order to receive these benefits.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: City-paid $50,000 life insurance policy, LTD Insurance, Employee Assistance Program via CIGNA, Education and Tuition Reimbursement Program, Dependent Care Assistance Program, Health Care Tax Free Dollar Account Program, Computer Purchase Program, Catastrophic Leave Pro¬gram, and free use of the City’s Sports Center and lap swim in City’s swimming pools. Employees may purchase supplemental life insurance, participate in a deferred compensation program and join a credit union.

EMPLOYEE UNIT: This position is in the Rohnert Park Employees' Association (RPEA) and is non-exempt for overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

SELECTION PROCESS
