Rohnert Park, CA (March 14, 2022) – The Rohnert Park City Council completed its
redistricting process by adopting Resolution
No. 2022-032, establishing a new City Council district map.
The five-district map can be reviewed online on the City’s
website.
Councilmembers
will continue to serve under the same election cycle with Council seats for
districts 2 and 5 being up for election in November 2022, and districts 1, 3
and 4 up for reelection in 2024.
The City
began the redistricting process in October 2021 and hired Wagaman Strategies to
serve as the demographer and Tripepi Smith to assist with outreach efforts. The
City launched the process by creating its redistricting website, www.rpcity.org/redistricting
The website provides background
information about redistricting, a schedule of upcoming meetings, mapping
tools, draft maps submitted throughout the process and answers to frequently
asked questions.
“The
redistricting process is about the people,” said Mayor Jackie Elward. “They
trusted us, and want to keep the sections together in the new districts. The
final map does this, reflecting what the community wants.”
To gather
public input and insights on the redistricting process, the City of Rohnert
Park held four public hearings and one community workshop:
·
October 26, 2021 - First Public Hearing
·
December 4, 2021 - Community Workshop
·
January 11, 2021 - Second Public Hearing
·
February 8, 2022 - Third Public Hearing
·
March 8, 2022 - Fourth Public Hearing
The
community workshop gave residents an opportunity to learn more about the
redistricting process, share their input on communities of interest and explain
how they would like their district boundaries to be drawn. The City’s
demographer also demonstrated how to use the mapping tools that were made
available for the public to use to create maps.
At the
public hearings, the City Council received an overview of the process,
established core communities of interest, reviewed public comments and
discussed draft maps submitted by the public and created by the demographer.
In
addition to public meetings, the City encouraged Rohnert Park community members
and community-based organizations to participate through redistricting emails,
social media posts and flyers. Throughout the public map-drawing period,
Rohnert Park received 19 community-drawn draft maps and several public comments
from members of the public regarding their preferred district boundaries and
draft maps. In addition to the maps submitted by the public, the City’s
demographer produced six draft maps.
At the
fourth public hearing on March 8, 2022, the City Council selected the final map
to be adopted via resolution.
